5 Symptoms of No Work-Life Balance

While a strong work ethic is an admirable attribute, if unmanaged, it can get out of control and harm other areas of your life. Finding a healthy work-life balance may not be something you have prioritized, but without it, you can find yourself burnt out with damaged relationships and lacking fulfillment in your life. If you suspect that you may be a workaholic, here are a few symptoms to watch out for.

1.     Your Work Schedule

One key indicator is the amount of time that you spend working. If you are typically the first in at the office and the last to leave, you may be unhealthily prioritizing work. For those who may not see the potential problem, overexertion can negatively impact your productivity and creativity.

2.     Unplugging From Work

A common symptom of workaholics is the inability to disconnect from work. This has become increasingly hard when many employees are working from home and their offices are steps away from the other aspects of their lives. If you find that even when you aren’t working, you are still thinking about work, this can be problematic for your mental health, stress response and physical wellbeing.

3.     Physical Symptoms of Overworking

Lacking this balance can trigger negative repercussions in your body. Whether you feel sluggish from skipping meals, you experience interrupted or reduced sleep or your body starts to decline because you have less time to exercise less, workaholics can experience physical manifestations. These interferences may seem small, but over time, you may begin to experience a more severe impact, including headaches, weight management issues, mood swings, fatigue and harmful coping mechanisms.

4.     Relationships

When you are focused so myopically on work, your relationships with family, friends and loved ones are likely another area that can be affected. This can be particularly harmful to children and has the possibility of leading to health challenges in children of overworked employees. Relationships are similar to work, in that, you often get out as much as you put in. If you neglect them, they will suffer.

5.     Success, Self-Worth and Satisfaction

A common association of professional success to self-worth can be one of the main causes. While working hard and achieving success at work can be satisfying, fulfillment can come from other places. Finding satisfaction and a better work-life balance can actually lead to higher satisfaction and more fulfilling existence.

Without work-life balance, we can end up harming ourselves, those around us, our wellbeing and our lives as a whole. If you suffer from these symptoms of a lack of balance with your professional life, take some time to reflect on how and where you can make changes to achieve a more harmonious existence.
